Abstract

This artwork was created as a part of the AIU Divine Creation competition 2025, by Maryam N KH E Alkhalifa, who is majoring in Graphic Design. The artwork is entitled "Contrast in Bloom".

Description

My artwork masterfully merges classical inspiration with modern craftsmanship, drawing deep influences from Jan Bruegel the Elder’s iconic "Vase of Flowers." The intricate floral elements, inspired by Bruegel’s signature style, are carefully arranged in the corners, framing the central Quranic calligraphy with precision and grace. This arrangement creates a harmonious balance between the organic, blooming beauty of the flowers and the sacred, lyrical flow of the calligraphy. The pencil work for the flowers adds an elegant softness, offering a delicate contrast to the bold, fluid strokes of the black ink calligraphy. This interplay between soft and striking textures heightens the visual depth of the piece, inviting the viewer to linger on both the fine details of the flowers and the profound message within the Quranic text. Luminous gold accents dance across the text, amplifying its presence and adding an ethereal glow that captures light from different angles. These golden highlights elevate the Quranic verses, imbuing them with a divine quality, while the use of gold ties the piece to a rich, sacred tradition of illuminated manuscripts. The gold serves not only as an aesthetic choice but also as a symbol of the verse's timeless, spiritual significance. The coffee-stained background imbues the artwork with an earthy warmth, mimicking the patina of an aged canvas while providing an organic, tactile texture that enhances its vintage feel. The depth of the stains creates a sense of history, as if the piece has witnessed time itself. This rich, aged backdrop not only connects the work to the past but also grounds it in a present moment, crafted by hand with careful intention. The contrast between the monochromatic florals and the dynamic Quranic calligraphy, set against the textured, warm background, creates a striking visual dialogue. The juxtaposition of delicate, historical floral motifs and the commanding power of the sacred text reinforces a theme of elegance, reverence, and timelessness, uniting the past and the present in a single, evocative composition.
