Abstract
This painting was created as part of the AIU Divine Creation competition 2025, by Rahaf F M F Alajmi, who is majoring in Interior Design. The artwork is entitled "The Beauty of God's Creation, " is inspired by Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede by Jacob van Ruisdael.
Description
"Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede" (c. 1670) by Jacob van Ruisdael is a breathtaking Dutch landscape that depicts a towering windmill beside a river in the tranquil countryside. The painting highlights van Ruisdael's mastery in capturing light, dramatic skies, and intricate natural details. The windmill, a symbol of Dutch ingenuity, serves as the focal point, framed by lush trees and expansive fields. The work beautifully conveys the harmonious relationship between nature and industry, reflecting the serene yet dynamic spirit of the Dutch Golden Age.
What captivates me about Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede is the vivid use of color and the exquisite portrayal of nature. The rich tones breathe life into the landscape, evoking a sense of tranquility and harmony. The windmill, standing tall in the foreground, adds a charming focal point to the serene rural scene, a stark contrast to the busy pace of modern life. The painting beautifully captures the timeless beauty and simplicity of the Dutch countryside, inviting a moment of peaceful reflection away from the noise of our current time.
My paintings are inspired by Dorsted's Windmill in Wijk, a beautiful Dutch landscape that captures a windmill by a quiet river. I love how it showcases nature and God's creation. In my work, I included part of Surah Al Imran (3:190):
( إن في خلق السماوات إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ )
Written in Arabic, the verse highlights the magnificence of creation. I placed it prominently in the sky, using black ink for most of the text and some red ink for the point that highlight on the end of the Surah. The script is styled like Arabic calligraphy Which is called ( الخط الاميري )and I used wooden colors to reflect nature's beauty, brightening the hues to add positivity to the piece.
My experience with drawing has been deeply inspired by Jacob van Ruisdael's Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede. I was captivated by the way it beautifully captured nature and God's creation. In my own work, I incorporated a verse from Surah Al Imran (3:190) in Arabic calligraphy to highlight the magnificence of creation. Using bright colors and wooden tones, I aimed to reflect the serenity of nature, creating a piece that conveys both peace and positivity.
