Abstract
This artwork was created as part of the AIU Divine Creation competition 2025, by Dalal Jarrah A Al-Khaledi, who is majoring in Interior Design. The artwork is entitled "Divine Creation through Nature" or "Sea and Sky".
Description
Through the chosen work of art, I attempted to create an idea of the Divine Creation through the natural beauty of the sky and sea. The composition speaks of the contrast created, with dark and stormy clouds at the top giving way to peaceful and serene white clouds at the bottom. This duality complements the Islamic view of creation, where the divine authority comprises all forces, be they chaotic or tranquil. Dark clouds represent the divine power over the storms of nature, and white clouds represent peace and purity, which emanate through the will of God.
The sea devoid of a shore depicts infiniteness within creation, for man's eyes cannot see beyond the horizon. In the same manner, the creation can never be observed from a beginning to an end. Islamic arts express this infinite concept through geometric patterns and vast compositions, which reflect the nature of God's creation, it knows no bounds and is beyond human comprehension. This motif goes in accordance with the tawhid concept, which states that whatever happens in the natural world is interrelated as these events were created by one divine source.
Colors play an important role in this artwork: the foreboding dark clouds are mysteries of creation; the bright clouds and sea speak of beauty and clarity and the order coming from divine design. The contrast between these two states represents the balance that is inherent within the Islamic worldview of creation, in which the divine can be apprehended in both the seen and the unseen aspects of existence. The dominance of blue suggests a view of divine creation that is vast and tranquil, indicating infinite acts of God's power and great calmness in created nature. It is an aspect of harmonious peace brought about by divine presence in creation
This work, in great measure, reflects the concepts of symmetry and balance, and beauty of nature as present in Islamic art. The representation of the sky and sea emphasizes the sublime beauty of this world while serving as a reminder that everything is under the divine hand.
