The composition includes a few important elements that I have included in my painting artwork: vases, flowers, a table, and a Bible to show us the creation of heaven. Each of these has special meaning, linking beauty and the idea of divine creation, which is central to Baroque art. The inspiration for this piece comes from Joseph Wakerly, a contemporary artist known for blending classical themes with modern techniques. His works often explore profound ideas about life, spirituality, and the passage of time, similar to the symbolism found in Baroque art. Wakerly's uses ordinary objects to convey powerful messages, showing that beauty can be found in simplicity. His influence guided the composition of Baroque Flowers 2024 Redux, turning everyday objects into symbols of divine creation. The elements in the artwork each carry deep meanings that reflect Baroque characteristics and the concept of divine creation. The vases represent life and creation. In Baroque art, vases often stand for the temporary nature of life, reminding us that life is short and that there is a bigger divine plan behind everything. The flowers symbolize beauty and divine creation. They reflect the Baroque fascination with nature and how it connects to God. Some flowers, like lilies, represent purity, and roses represent love. The table is the place where everything comes together, showing the connection between heaven and earth. In Baroque art, the table is where the spiritual and the earthly meet. The items on the table, like flowers, vases, and the Bible, represent this blend. The Bible represents divine wisdom and creation. It connects the artwork to religious themes that are important in Baroque art. The open Bible invites viewers to reflect on its sacred verses and think about how faith and creation are linked. The stones are placed around the edges of the painting to represent strength, stability, and the foundation of life. The stones add a natural element to the composition, showing how every part of nature, no matter how small, is part of God’s creation. The artwork also features the religious verse Surah Al-Imran 3:190 — “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” This verse highlights the beauty of creation and encourages viewers to reflect on the divine order of the universe. Its inclusion adds a personal and spiritual dimension to the artwork, aligning with the Baroque theme of connecting beauty to faith. The artwork was created through a combination of hand-drawn elements, paper crafting, and textured decorations, resulting in a visually rich composition. Since mixed media is a preferred approach, different materials and techniques were combined to add depth and character. The process began by placing a white A3 paper in the oven, giving it an aged, parchment-like appearance that enhances its antique aesthetic. Once the background was ready, a wooden table was carefully drawn and colored using pencil colors and an acrylic pen, adding texture and shading to create a more realistic and dimensional look. To further enhance the design, brown wood-patterned paper was cut into strips and arranged as decorative lines, bringing structure to the composition. The floral arrangement was crafted by cutting small pieces of paper, rolling them with scissors to form curved petals, and coloring them to create a vibrant, layered effect. To add a natural element, dried flowers from a tailoring materials shop were placed within the bouquet, blending beautifully with the handcrafted paper flowers. Small white buttons were added for a delicate, elegant touch. Lastly, small stones were arranged along the edges, forming a decorative border that frames the artwork and enhances its rustic charm. By combining drawing, paper crafting, and textured materials, this piece reflects both creativity and patience. The use of pencil colors and an acrylic pen on the table helps achieve a more detailed and realistic effect, making the artwork stand out as a unique and expressive creation. The creation of Baroque Flowers 2024 Redux involved several stages. Research into Baroque still life paintings helped shape the composition, while careful planning ensured that each object carried symbolic meaning. Acrylic paints were used to achieve rich, warm tones, reflecting the dramatic lighting typical of Baroque art. The process required multiple revisions to capture the desired atmosphere, especially when reworking the colors. Despite moments of frustration, dedication and patience played a key role in completing the piece. The final artwork reflects both the beauty of the Baroque period and the personal journey of learning and growth throughout the course. Baroque art remains one of the most expressive periods in art history, blending beauty, spirituality, and symbolism to create powerful works that continue to inspire today. The artwork Baroque Flowers 2024 Redux captures this legacy by combining traditional Baroque elements with a modern perspective. Each object carries deep meanings that reflect divine creation, while the inclusion of Surah Al-Imran 3:190 adds a unique spiritual layer. This project not only serves as a reflection of the Baroque period but also symbolizes the journey of hard work, dedication, and faith. Through this artwork, the beauty of nature and the divine message behind it come together—reminding us that every part of creation holds a deeper meaning for those who seek to understand it. Art is not only a reflection of beauty, but a powerful journey that transforms patience and dedication into something timeless. This artwork was created as a part of the AIU Divine Creation competition 2025, by Sara Alostath, who is majoring in the School of Architecture and Design.
