Abstract
This artwork was created as a part of the AIU Divine Creation competition 2025, by Dalal Jarrah A Al Khaledi, who is majoring in Interior Design. The artwork is entitled "Pearl of Creation", an A3 mixed media composition, inspired by Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Description
My A3 mixed media composition, inspired by Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, captures Baroque themes of divine light and introspection. Drawing from Vermeer’s iconic painting, I used vivid paint and soft shadows to reimagine the girl’s enigmatic gaze as a symbol of divine revelation, encircling her pearl earring with a subtle halo effect to suggest a sacred presence. The verse from the Holy Quran ‘Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth… Light upon light’ (Surah An-Nur, 24:35) can support this masterpiece by connecting the pearl’s radiance to a celestial glow that transcends the canvas. The composition emphasizes the interplay of light against a muted (black) background, reflecting Vermeer’s technique of isolating a figure in quiet radiance. The glowing pearl and delicate contrasts in my work mirror Baroque techniques. By amplifying the pearl’s luminescence and embedding a verse from the Holy Quran, I tried to evoke the Baroque’s awe-inspiring spirit, transforming a simple portrait into a meditation on light as a divine gift. Crafting my artwork, I worked on an A3 canvas, layering acrylics, ink, and a pearlescent medium. The biggest challenge was capturing the pearl’s glow, a focal point of the original, which I tackled by blending white and silver tones until it shimmered against the darker backdrop. This creative journey mirrored Baroque artists’ dedication to light and faith, as I wrestled with technical precision to convey a deeper meaning, much like Vermeer did in his understated yet profound style.
