The Baroque period (17th–18th century) was an era in the arts originating in Italy, characterized by dramatic, deep colors, sharp shadows, and dynamic compositions. It followed the Renaissance, emphasizing passion and tension over calmness and rationality. Prominent Baroque painters included Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Peter Paul Rubens, who often depicted human subjects and religious scenes. The era also saw a rise in history and landscape paintings, particularly in the Netherlands. Baroque sculpture and architecture featured expressive movement and rejected straight lines, often portraying Biblical scenes.
