The Baroque period (1600s–1750s) originated from the Portuguese word "barroco," meaning oddly shaped pearl. It is characterized by dramatic movement, chiaroscuro (light and shadow), and the integration of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Judith Lyster, a notable Dutch female artist, exemplified Baroque style in her painting "The Proposition" with strategic lighting. The Dutch Golden Age saw advancements in trade, science, art, and military, influencing Baroque artists like Frans Hals. Scientific discoveries during this era significantly impacted artistic thinking and creations.
