Baroque art, starting in the late 1500s, is memorable for its dramatic use of light and shadow, intense emotions, and grand designs, reflecting religious conflicts and powerful monarchies. It reacted against the calm Renaissance style, aiming to stir emotions and create movement, with artists like Caravaggio and Bernini showcasing the era's drama. Baroque landscape painting, exemplified by Claude Lorrain's serene scenes and Jacob van Ruisdael's tumultuous landscapes, used chiaroscuro to add depth and emotional intensity. These paintings often included human and architectural elements, emphasizing the relationship between people and nature. Baroque art remains influential, inspiring contemplation and connection through its powerful imagery and compositions.
